UNESCO’s eAtlas of Teachers
In particular, the chapter on Gender (Section 4) tells a data story that centres on the rough correlation between the presence of female teachers in the classroom and the persistence of girls in their studies. For example, countries that have more female primary school teachers see more girls graduate from primary school and enrol in secondary school. While women tend to dominate the teaching profession around the world, the reverse is true in sub-Saharan Africa, where girls are most likely to be out of school.
There is a wider story about the chronic shortage of teachers, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Countries with growing school-age populations are putting untrained teachers into classrooms, which is raising questions about the quality of teaching and learning. Some of the tweets deal with these angles.
