Despite women being key actors in contributing to a more equitable and sustainable world through maintaining the livelihoods and welfare of their families and communities, twenty years after the first Rio conference, great social and economic inequities still remain. In the lead up to the Rio+20 UN Conference on sustainable development, women’s groups are pushing hard to include gender on the agenda, especially as women continue to be marginalised as they make up the majority of those living in poverty. However, while Rio+20 will be an important opportunity to define international frameworks to advance sustainability, it is essential to focus on the significant contribution that women are already making and can continue to make to sustainable development. Read more about this and see how the media are covering this issue.

Women's presence at Rio+20

The Women’s Environment and Development Organisation (WEDO) will have a strong presence at Rio+20. Other initiatives, such as the civil society network Women’s Major Group, are advocating for ambitious outcomes for Rio+20: the Women’s Major Group, in particular, represents the diversity of women's priorities and demands from political leaders to achieve gender equality and social and environmental justice to secure a sustainable future for all.

But concerns were raised in the Wikigender online discussion that "gender dimensions in Rio+20 may be again tokenistic, with no real scope for transformation". It will be important to keep the focus and reinforce our efforts at Rio +20 and in its follow up. See below for a selection of media articles on women’s diverse roles in ensuring sustainable development, obstacles they face, and solutions to guarantee their rights and enable their full participation for a greener and fairer world.
