|Summary||La Pietra Coalition will launch The Third Billion Campaign|
On February 1, 2012, La Pietra Coalition, an alliance of corporations, governments, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions launched its Third Billion Campaign. The event took place in New York. Over the next decade, the impact of women on the global economy – as producers, entrepreneurs, employees and consumers – will be at least as significant as that of China’s and India’s, respective one-billion-plus populations, if not greater. In other words: if women’s economic potential can be successfully harnessed and leveraged, it would be the equivalent of having an additional one billion individuals in business and in the workforce, contributing to the global economy: often referred to as the “third billion.” The Third Billion Campaign, will raise public awareness, promote commitments by international companies and conduct major advocacy efforts with governments and multilateral organizations to take steps to prepare and enable these 1 billon women in developing, emerging and industrialized nations – whose economic lives have been stunted, underleveraged or suppressed – to participate more fully in the global economy.
